Position Summary:

The Supplier Development Engineer is responsible for providing technical support and oversite at key suppliers in order to improve supplier performance at the Strategic Business Units. Specific focus will be supplier analysis, development activities, production support, part qualifications, improvement activities, corrective actions, and new product introductions to ensure component parts and assemblies are consistently manufactured in total compliance to specified requirements. Simultaneously and in conjunction with the Corporate Supply Chain team, this position will support the balanced improvement of quality, cost and service, all while ensuring on time delivery.

*Duties and Responsibilities: *

  • Develops collaborative working relationships with suppliers to properly identify and mitigate potential production and/or manufacturing constraints for an on-time delivery of purchased products.

  • Supports production readiness reviews between the supplier and the Strategic Business Units throughout the development process to organize and analyze all areas of supplier production in preparation for full rate output.

  • Coordinates with engineering, manufacturing engineering, Strategic Business Unit Supply Chain on component delivery / quality issues and supplier improvement initiatives.

  • Interfaces with the suppliers' engineering, manufacturing and procurement departments as well as the respective internal Leonardo DRS departments to drive cost effective manufacturing process improvements that optimize throughput and minimize waste.

  • Drive a systematic problem solving, process improvement, and value enhancement approach utilizing Lean Six Sigma (DMAIC) principles in collaboration with suppliers

  • Assure supplier’s corrective and preventive action plans are developed and executed in compliance with an 8D process. Report on the status of corrective actions, as required, to category management, Strategic Business Unit, and executive management.

  • Perform supplier QMS on-site assessments and assistance visits for supplier selection, to improve supplier performance, and achieve balanced improvement objectives.

  • Supports new product activities and direction to optimize the transition from new product development to production.

  • Function as a technical liaison between suppliers, engineering, Category Management and Strategic Business Unit SCM to resolve supplier related issues.

  • Track the supplier’s performance indicators, based on their scorecards and rankings, to facilitate and develop the supply base’s ability to consistently meet or exceed our defined expectations.

  • Support the Supply Chain activities and direction on supplier development, risk management, reduction and consolidation.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field or equivalent experienceNovice technical expertise and application domain knowledge

  • Basic knowledge of ISO Standards, 6 Sigma tools, Statistics

  • Ability to understand military specifications and to read blue prints

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and the ability to support supplier development activities, continuous improvement initiatives and quality management tools.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of the principles of capacity management, quality management, lean manufacturing within an industrial environment.

  • Ability to effectively interface with suppliers and internal teams to be able to influence and/or lead change necessary to execute strategy and achieve goals.

  • High level of audit and problem solving skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at any level.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities; ability to multi-task.

  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, communication and writing skills
