DRS Naval Power Systems (NPS)a multi-site operation responsible for $350 million of revenue with locations in Milwaukee, WI, Danbury, CT, Fitchburg, MA, and High Ridge, MO with an employee base of approximately 900 employees. NPS is structured into four Lines of Business: Surface, Submarines, Nuclear instrumentation and Controls and Marlo Coil focusing on supporting the power and propulsion needs of the U.S. Navy. As the DRS Naval Power Systems Quality Engineer, you are responsible for supporting the Integrated Project Team (IPT) to meet the project goals of delivery, cost and quality. Design, develop, analyze, document and support the IPT program through a Quality Plan, and input to the Project Management Plan (PMP). Ensures all aspects of the program are driven to meet the requirements of the contract, and its deliverables. Leads quality activities that drive continuous improvement across the program and organization. Ability to complete a technical project independently, mentor and coach other team members.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for reviewing the customer contract, specifications and requirements, and develop a Quality Plan, based on the contract requirements and contract deliverables.
Design, develop, analyze, document, and support quality initiatives using programs such as 6 Sigma/Lean, SPC, FMEA, Process capability and ISO Quality Management systems.
Responsible for developing working knowledge of computer programs used for supporting function and the IPT.
Lead cost, efficiency and quality improvement efforts in support of the IPT.
Provide quality leadership to peers and others in support of the DRS mission.
Responsible for training/developing the Quality Inspector assigned to the project, with emphasis on critical inspection requirements, and the deployment of superior processes in lieu of traditional inspection activities.
Ability to complete the IPT program independently, and mentor and coach other team members.
Ability to influence the IPT towards a preventive, quality oriented culture from design throughout the life of the product.
Maintains project budgets for quality related functions on their assigned projects.
Document component and subsystem specifications and material requirements.
Analyze designs as necessary and make recommendations from a quality perspective.
Communicate clearly (written and oral) with manufacturing, supply chain, program management and the customer as required.
Provides technical expertise and assistance to IPT team members, and support personnel.
Interact with technical management, other professionals, technicians and support personnel to coordinate, recommend and confer regarding technical activities and progress.
Must be able to mentor, assist and train other quality engineers.
Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization.
Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience, master’s degree preferred.
Expected to have knowledge and significant experience in multiple engineering disciplines.
Extensive experience with implementation of successful design quality and improvement initiatives and processes.
Background working to contract requirements and deliverable dates.
Extensive manufacturing experience, preferably in an electromechanical environment.
Experience successfully completing a technical project independently.
Permanent US Citizenship status.
Mastery of technologies and domain knowledge.
Knowledge of FAR clauses.
Past experience in DoD contractor industry
