DRS Naval Power Systems (NPS) a multi-site operation responsible for $350 million of revenue with locations in Milwaukee, WI, Danbury, CT, Fitchburg, MA, and High Ridge, MO with an employee base of approximately 900 employees. Position Summary

Embedded Firmware Engineer to support the development and test of VHDL and C/C++ for complex power conversion system products, from standard components like programmable relays and motor overload protection devices up to large electric drives and multi-megawatt power conversion cabinets with working voltages up to 15kV.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyze customer requirements and develop internal software requirements

  • Develop efficient and effective embedded system architecture to support requirements

  • Assist in the design, implementation, and debug of large embedded software sub-systems

  • Supports software requirements-based test and system test activities

Basic Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science with an emphasis on VHDL for FPGAs, or equivalent education and experience

  • At least 1 year of experience in the development of at least moderately complex real time embedded firmware

  • Must be a self-starter comfortable with taking responsibility with a significant software design effort

  • Must work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment

  • Familiar with software development processes and configuration management

  • Candidates must be US citizens and meet DRS security standards as imposed by DoD, including the issuance of any necessary security clearance by the US government within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.

Additional Desirable Qualifications Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience with Xilinx synthesis toolchain

  • Experience with testing VHDL blocks using ModelSim

  • Education/experience with an emphasis on power electronics or motor control software

  • Experience with embedded software related to the use of PWM controllers, A/D and D/A converters, communications interfaces, and hardware driver/board support for electronic devices is a desirable

  • Experience writing embedded software in C/C++

  • Experience using git, Bitbucket, and JIRA

  • Experience in DO178, DO254, or equivalent quality system
