Position Summary

Leonardo DRS, Land Electronics, in Huntsville, AL, is looking for a mechanical design engineer to join our hardware design team. Leonardo DRS is a global developer of products for a wide range of defense applications. Land Electronics specializes in rugged electronic products and systems for military ground vehicle applications. Our products require a broad range of mechanical capabilities to include rugged electronics packaging for harsh environments, high power vehicle electronics, military and manufacturing test equipment, circuit card assemblies and heatsinks, test fixtures, and rugged cable assemblies, as well as vehicle system design, integration and installation.

DRS Land Electronics in Huntsville, also works closely with our sister location in Melbourne, FL, to develop rugged military computer and network solutions and electro-optical sight systems.

Mechanical designers are involved with the design, fabrication and modification of mechanical and/or electro mechanical components, sub-systems and systems. Involvement could range across the life cycles, from development, to on-site installation support, to production or vendor issue resolution. Duties include mechanical design and analysis, design documentation and peer reviews, as well as resolution of product or process problems.

Responsibilities Include

  • Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems or subsystems

  • Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems and services

  • Perform initial and ongoing design reviews

  • Deliver documentation offering a critical analysis and suggestions for correcting errors

  • Identify process deficiencies and develop solutions to improve those deficiencies

  • Develop CAD project models and drawings

  • Support qualification, production, fielding, issue resolution of products

  • Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments

  • Collaborate with Project Leadership to develop an accurate accounting of all engineering hours required for various types of Internal projects

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience

  • Experience in Mechanical Design or ruggedized equipment for military applications

  • Proficient in Electronics Packaging using PTC Creo, and Intralink

  • Experience in Cable and Wiring Harness design

  • Experience in Vehicle Integration

  • Familiarity with Military and Industrial specifications

  • Thermal or Structural Analysis experience is a plus

  • Must be willing to travel internationally
