Job Summary

As a Manager of Software Engineering (embedded) at Leonardo DRS Naval Electronics you will be responsible for managing a team of software engineers on complex tactical radar software products through completion on time and within budget. Leonardo DRS Naval Electronics engineering managers are responsible for functional personnel management as well as engineering development. You will apply your technical and development experience to lead the execution of the software architecture and design-related development of tactical radar embedded software. The lead software engineer will provide subject matter expertise to client programs for embedded software in radar components and lead the software development operations as part of the engineering team. This role includes software task leadership to solve software issues during design, test, transition to production, and formal deliveries. Job focus areas include leading software engineering activities in software architecture applied to software design, development, testing, and modification of sub-systems or systems and the sustainment of these systems through the product life cycle.

Job Responsibilities

In this role, the candidate will be responsible for driving technology and completion of assigned technical solutions, efficient execution, and task completion on time and within budget. The position also involves technical management experience to lead software engineers in providing solutions for software related projects. Primary and essential accountabilities include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as functional manager of 3-10 software engineers.

  • Timecard approval

  • Manage labor coverage and assignments.

  • Manage periodic activities (e.g., Performance Appraisals, Training Plans, etc.).

  • Mentor and coach direct reports in career development and technical knowledge.

  • Manage and direct the work of direct reports.

  • Interface with internal and external stakeholders and customers on software engineering topics.

Job Responsibilities (continued)

  • Developing and integrating embedded software using C and C++ for advanced Surface-to-Surface or Surface-to-Air radar systems.

  • Design, development, analysis, testing, integration (on hardware) and debugging of computer software applications and/or systems.

  • Software applications and systems may include Image and Signal Processing, Real-time, Firmware, Database Design, Operating Systems, Operator/Machine Interface, networking and communications, or others.

  • This includes working with previously written code to make bug fixes and improvements.

  • Development and deployment performed on Red Hat Linux OS with Red Hawk real-time extensions.

Secondary Accountabilities

  • Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) guidance for embedded RadioFrequency (RF) software development activities.

  • Perform unit and system-level analysis to measure performance, cost, schedule, and risk trade-offs.

  • Author, derive, allocate and trace requirements for new or improved software products or services.

  • Support software qualification efforts, development of test software and qualification plans, test activities, and failure analysis efforts.

  • Resolve field performance issues via failure analysis, debug and change management.

  • Create and process documentation updates including generation and maintenance of Software Development Plans (SDPs), Software Requirements Documents (SRDs), Software Design Descriptions (SDDs), etc.

  • Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments and software build deliveries.

  • Coordinate and oversee the maintenance and support of software engineering tools, lab equipment and environments.

  • Create and distribute builds, rpms and media while coordinating creation and delivery of Technical Data Package (TDP).

  • Support and/or lead Internal Research and Development (IR&D) projects, which may include prototype design and development to retire key development risks.

Qualifications

Technical degree (Master or Bachelor of Science) in relevant field (Computer Science or related field of study) with at least 7 years of direct experience related to Software Engineering, radar IF signal processing and must have demonstrated success in solving technical problems.

Capable of achieving project objectives and be able to interface with various levels of internal management as well as program sponsors, customers, and sub-contractors. The following skills are desired, though applicants are not required to have every skill listed:

  • Thorough understanding embedded or firmware development processes.

  • Demonstrated experience with Unix/Linux operating system administration.

  • Fluency in developing in real-time operating systems.

  • Familiarity with software lifecycle processes such as requirements, design, version control, testing.

  • Fluency in C/C++ software programming languages.

  • Knowledge of performing Root Cause Analyses to implement appropriate corrective and preventive actions.

  • Experience gathering and interpreting data, generating summaries and presentations, and presenting to technical and management leaders and peers.
