Senior Communications Technician (Fairbanks, Alaska)
Assists in carrying out routine information systems and/or information technology tasks within more than one discipline. Disciplines may include but are not limited to VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal), point to point microwave, point to multipoint microwave, application support, database administration, software quality assurance/quality control, network telecommunications, and infrastructure operations of administration, analysis, engineering and design, field support of diesel generators and DC (Direct Current) power systems.
The individual selected for this position will be part of a 24x7 customer support operation. Will be responsible for participating in all levels of customer operations, participating in customer acquisition and demonstration, installation, maintenance, and customer/help desk support. The individual will be required to travel to rural and remote areas, organize and prepare for travel, and work independently to resolve issues. This position will involve some heavy lifting as well as communications tower climbing of up to 180 feet above/high. Successful applicant will work with engineering, applications, and operations, create trouble tickets, video teleconferencing, web filtering, Apple and Windows platforms as well as working with new and emerging technologies.
Performs moderately complex technical functions related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of various types of communications equipment (i.e., voice, data, network, satellite).
Primary & Essential Accountabilities
Performs a variety of complex technical functions related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of various types of communications equipment (i.e., voice, data, network, satellite)
Monitors performance and locates problems
May provide work leadership and technical assistance to lower-level Technicians and/or with instructing customers on the operation and proper use of equipment
May be located at a customer site or an operations center
May interface with vendors on new technology and system updates
Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
High school or equivalent business training
Five years of directly related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively in a team-oriented environment
Strong analytic and problem-solving skills
Some college experience in computer science, electrical engineering, RF (Radio Frequency) engineering, or related technical field or equivalent combination of education and technical experience
Physical requirements include lifting, climbing towers and ladders, bending and kneeling and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Valid driver’s license
VSAT, iDirect, Trango or comparable experience
Experience and knowledge of networking and IP networks video teleconferencing, web filters
Windows Active Directory and Apple/Mac Open Directory design and customer service experience
- Qualified rescue climber and/or qualified tower climber
