Position Summary

The Quality Engineer (QAE) is responsible for assisting manufacturing, engineering, and Quality management with determining and developing plans to meet customer requirements on development and production programs. The Quality Engineer will participate in Configuration Management tasks as a member of Product CCBs, analyze and report RMR activities, support program Qualification and Reliability testing, and participate in Program Reviews. Identify critical points in the manufacturing process, define sampling procedures, determine inspection and test methods, and perform yield analysis and reporting.

The Quality Engineer is responsible for managing and driving continuous improvement activities across various organizations at the DRS Dallas, TX site. Troubleshoot and diagnose weaknesses with existing business processes; make modifications and improvements as needed. Help ensure compliance to both internal processes and external regulations by overseeing and managing the internal audit program and playing a significant role in the external AS9100 audit. Quickly and efficiently, drive corrective actions to closure. Assist with CMMI appraisal activities as needed. Assist Program Quality Engineering Manager with other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications and Required Skills

  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain a security clearance is required.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering/business or equivalent combination of education/training and experience.

  • Strong people skills and the ability to work well with cross-functional teams and/or employees from numerous backgrounds and job functions (design, engineering, manufacturing, management, contracts, programs, etc.).

  • Solid problem solving skills.

  • Communicate clearly. Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.

  • Strong background with compliance, documentation, record keeping, etc.

  • Understanding of and/or experience with manufacturing environments.

  • Manage/lead the work of others as assigned.

  • Responsible for assisting with quality system development and supporting product quality improvements.

  • Develop, maintain and deploy Quality Plans and activities that translate Customer requirements into planned activities.

  • Ability to work independently under supervision of others.

  • Provides ongoing quality system support to include performing internal audits, ensuring implementation of root cause corrective actions.

  • Participates in supplier selection and improvement processes.

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of equipment, tooling and calibration industry standards (e.g. ISO, AS, ANSI, NIST, etc.).

  • Understanding of cleanroom principles and how to work within these constraints.

  • Working knowledge of statistical techniques and analysis such as Statistical Process Control (SPC).

  • Knowledge on control of government/customer owned property.

  • Knowledge of effective training methods and programs to maximize quality and ensure compliance.

  • Professional certification such as ASQ Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and/or Professional Engineering License or Registration.

  • Ability to perform internal audits.

  • Understanding of concepts of failure analyses.

  • Familiarity with various mechanical inspection techniques.

  • ASQ training/certification in Quality and Reliability Engineering

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate process improvements and rollouts of new initiatives.

  • Have a leading role with the annual AS9100 audit and, as applicable, CMMI appraisal. Prepare and/or teach audit preparation training classes for potential audits.

  • Quickly drive audit actions to closure noting opportunities for improvement, not just compliance.

  • Able to negotiate and drive changes, big and small, that allow for quality compliance with minimal impact on the efficiency of other business operations.

  • Assist with document management and control. Comfortable with reviewing significant amounts of documentation for compliance.

  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization.

  • Assists in resolving customer quality issues.

  • Reviews and approves engineering/test and contractor documentation and provides input to assure that appropriate quality requirements are addressed.

  • Gathers, organizes, monitors, analyzes and reports on information on products and processes.

  • Participates on product quality improvement teams, Material Review Boards and Failure Review Boards.

  • Evaluates and dispositions non conforming material.

  • Provides technical support for Assembly/Test/Inspection personnel to include executing workmanship improvement plans, developing inspection methods and criteria, specifying appropriate sampling plans, interpreting and revising specifications, and processing non-conforming materials.

  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Conditions

  • Perform work in office and factory floors including work in a Class 100 cleanroom facility with related gowning requirements.

  • Bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking.

Working Conditions
